Scout Tours

The Canyon Lake Gorge is open to Scout groups for guided tours and may be requested by completing the Group Tour Request Form (linked below). Each tour is led by a volunteer certified Guide with assistance from trained Docents. We welcome scout leader input and will work individually to help ensure educational concepts are tailored per prearrangement.

Regular public/group tours are $10/person for the 3-hour tour. Scout group tours will receive a 50% discount at $5 per person and one parent per scout. All other participants going in with the group will pay full tour price of $10 (this ratio works on the Honor system.) Children under the age of 7 are not allowed in the Gorge. Required adult/youth ratio: Ages 7-10, one adult for every child; ages 11-15, one adult for every three children; ages 16-20, one adult for every five youth.

For the younger cub scouts, we recommend a short (1.5 hr.) of the upper or lower gorge. Goals for each of these two short tours can be emailed to interested scout groups. Tours can be modified to fit individual group request annotated on the Group Tour Request Form (i.e., Scouts working on a Geology badge.)

Both tours highlight the Power of Water theme with Goals that include increasing the participant's understanding of the:

  • Canyon Reservoir Project and Canyon Lake Gorge through the partnership efforts between the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Gorge Preservation Society.
  • Geology of Central Texas.
  • Hydrogeology, especially the interconnectedness of groundwater and surface water.
  • Interrelationship between humans and the physical environment.
  • Process of biologic succession and an introduction to common plants and animals found in the natural communities of the Gorge.
  • Appreciation and respect for the natural environment!

Scout tour requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis around pre-scheduled public and group tours. Call the office to help determine available dates/times -- 830-964-5424.

Public Tours are posted on this website quarterly (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec)

Please allow at least 3 weeks for processing from the date you submit your request to the requested Tour date. Requests received prior to posting Public Tours will receive precedence: submit early for priority. Once this form is received and processed, an email confirmation with Liability Forms will be sent. Parents or guardian who is authorized to sign the waiver must sign for those under 18 years old. Please have all forms ready for collection the day of the Tour.

Indicate on the form if you group will be arriving by bus for additional shuttling options.

One week prior to the tour date, the Scout's Point of Contact (POC) will receive a detailed e-mail reminder with relevant information, guidelines, directions, and their Guide/Docents' names and phone contact. If you need this information more than seven days before your tour, please email or call the office.

It is important that the POC relay all procedures to all Tour participants. Please provide a separate POC name/cell number on the Group Tour Request form for an individual(s) actually going on the tour if different than the individual making the written request.
